ROLE OF CT IN EVALUATION OF ABDOMINAL MASSES

 MAIN ROLE OF CT:-

An abdominal CT scan makes detailed pictures of the structures inside your belly very quickly. This test may be used to look for: Cause of blood in the urine. Cause of abdominal pain or swelling. Palpable abnormalities, such as abdominal mass or organomegaly. Both US and CT are excellent techniques for confirming or excluding the presence of an abdominal mass, with sensitivity and specificity higher than 95%. The accuracy of US in determining the organ of origin is estimated at between 88% and 91%.Mainly CT scan are 100 percent accurately in evaluation of abdominal masses. For intra-abdominal masses, contrast-enhanced CT and ultrasound examination have demonstrated accuracy. For abdominal wall masses, which may arise from muscle, subcutaneous tissue, or connective tissue, MRI, CT, and ultrasound all provide diagnostic value. An abdominal CT scan uses a special X-ray machine to take pictures of the liver, spleen, kidneys, bladder, stomach, intestines, pancreas, and adrenal glands, blood vessels, and lymph nodes. CT scans can show the stomach fairly clearly and often can confirm the location of a cancer. CT scans can also show other parts of the body to which stomach cancer might have spread, such as the liver and nearby lymph nodes.

Ct scan protocol

Technique:-

1) Patient position. supine position, abdomen centered within the gantry. ...

2) Tube voltage. ≤120 kVp.

3) Tube current. as suggested by the automatic exposure control.

4) Scout. above the diaphragm to the lesser trochanter.

5) Scan extent.

6) Scan direction.

7) Scan geometry.

8) Oral contrast.

CONCLUSION

Conclusion. Acute abdominal pain is a common presenting symptom in the emergency department and has a wide variety of causes. CT provides rapid and accurate assessment to narrow the differential and aid in the diagnosis of both surgical and non-surgical causes of pain
